Pelion mountain above Kissos

The walks

Mark Taplin is a wonderful guide to the Pelion area. He is knowledgeable, and is warmly greeted in Greek by local people wherever he goes. Whilst walking the spectacular paths along the coast and slopes of the mountain, Mark shares fascinating information about local culture and natural features. He is thoughtful and considerate, approaching everything he does with great care so participants on his tours can be sure of meticulous planning. I've been on several day outings with Mark and felt they took me deeper into the real Greece - whether visiting small towns and villages, hiking the paths, finishing the day on an empty beach or at a fish restaurant hidden at the end of a long bumpy track.

Sample six-day itinerary - Mark likes to include  new & different routes which he thinks will be interesting and adventurous

The suggested itinerary is arranged to offer a varied programme of challenging full-day walks, visiting a number of the Pelion’s special places. The terrain will range from a blend of easy and moderate, to hard in places. There will be the option to modify the itinerary to suit individual requests for easier routes.

An extended 9-day or 12-day itinerary can be arranged for those wanting to join two adventurous long distance two-day walks, or alternatively select rest days for beach visits.

Day 1

A mixed day of walking by traditional cobbled paths, tracks and country roads, via Aghios Konstantinos, through the magical ravine below Kissos, to the attractive village of Mouresi, past the spectacular viewpoint at Tsouka overlooking the Aegean, down to the scenic harbour of Damouchari, along the coast to the resort settlement of Aghios Ioanis, returning through the back lanes of the charming small village of Aghios Dhimitrios. (6 to 8 hours)

Old mule path
Forest slope

Day 2

An adventure off the beaten track into the heart of the mountain side. A visit to Timbano Kissou, where water for the Kissos village irrigation springs from the rocks, through dense forest to take in the majestic view from Drakou Skamni, around the tree clad ravine in the cleft of the mountain overlooking Kissos, which is never far from view. (5 to 6 hours)

Panagia Faneromeni

Day 3

Descending on regular paths and tracks allowing breathtaking views of the Aegean coast, to the small resort of Aghios Ioannis, then along the coast on a secluded route which takes in numerous small churches which are hardly ever seen (we have claimed as many as 11 in one day). Returning through quiet lanes and apple orchards past the peaceful village of Anilio. (5 to 6 hours)

Secret School

Day 4

Setting out from the lovely setting of Damouchari (transport provided), walking from here along the spectacular coastline to Fakistra, visiting the Secret School perched in a cave high above the sea. Then climbing a network of small paths to the famous village of Tsagaradha to be rewarded by the splendor and shade of its 1200 year old tree, before the impressive descent on one of the best preserved traditional cobbled paths (Kalderimi) to the inviting beach of Damouchari, with the option of a meal at the water’s edge or overlooking the harbour (return transport). More variety than you would imagine possible in a day. (6 to 7 hours)

Day 5

A challenging climb to one of the peaks of Mt Pelion, through magnificent forests with glimpses of the way ahead on rarely trodden paths, to drink in the panorama from Schizouravli giving views of both the Aegean and the Pagasiticos Gulf. The descent takes us through hidden areas, once alive with charcoal burners, now populated only by wild boar, returning by another unused route to Kissos. (8 to 9 hours)

Pelion peak
Banikas cove

Day 6

A varied and tranquil day of walking through fruit orchards, chestnut woods and olive groves, to the neighbouring village of Anilio past its secluded small farms, across the river bed near the hidden coves of Banikas, to the stunning beach of Agii Saranda with its irresistible clear bathing waters. An afternoon on the beach and return to Kissos by car is an option - or an energetic hike up to the village of Makrirachi, and return walk through woodland. (4 to 7 hours)

Views from the sea. An optional extra can be to have a boat collect us from the beach and motor along the coast (weather permitting) so as to take in the sites and variety of the areas walked during the week.

On some occasions there will be the opportunity to have lunch at a cafe or taverna along our route, on other days we will carry a snack lunch with us.

Where possible walks are in a circuit from Kissos. When a return journey by road is required, transport is included.

Consideration will be given to the abilities of the walking group, as well as any unexpected local conditions. The itinerary may be modified on the recommendation of your guide Mark, and by agreement with the group.

In the event of a group with mixed abilities, the walks allow for some optional return journeys by road transport.
